Guys,

I had the pleasure of being invited to casting practice here in San Antonio by Dig On Me, president of the SFCCI long distance casting club. Carlos told me over the phone he has thrown 760+ feet under tournament conditions. Well that is good enough to peak my curiosity.

Well these guys were just great. I got there on time at 10:00 am. They offered me a chair, drink, and food within minutes. Carlos went out of his way to make me feel welcome. I saw Big Daddy, a long time friend, and meet some new friends. Team Buddahead showed up about 20 minutes later, so I met Gary.

Well these guys can throw some lead. As I watched them, I wondered if they had ever though of hunting dear with those long rods. There were a variety of personalities, but they were all very serious about the sport.

Dig On Me spent about 30 minutes showing me some basics, and providing a strategy for progressing to become a serious distance caster. He said you really need to work on one thing at a time and get that down, before working on something else. If you tackle too much at once, you will get frustrated.

I went to work on the pendelum. Last year I had spent some time on the cast, but never mastered the timing. The area I needed work on was the initial positioning of the weight, before loading the rod in the early part of the cast. Dig on me got me focused on that. After several casts, Team Buddahead suggested extending the lenth of the line to the reel position before casting out to correct my 'over cast'. After those two tips, it all came together and I got my farthest cast ever; 141 yards on 20 lbs line and a reel used for surf fishing. You could see the spool under the line.

After casting practice we went over to Rays and had some BBQ. We talked for six hours before breaking camp and calling it a day. It was a grea time and I look forwards to going to the next practice and seeing if I can make it over 150 yards.

Thanks for everything Guys!
