Fished PK on Sat. The north end was full of floaters and foam ,I pray that the GA Bloom is not part of the mixure. We caught 17 dinks in 16-22 feet of water. Chartreuse slab worked best. Headed to the Peanut patch and caught 4 keepers using blue and silver rattle trap in front of the docks. Best fishing came on road beds in 25-35 ft. in front of and east of Bee Creek. Two limits of solid mag sandies with some unders strippers, plus one big fish break off. could not turn her to reel up any line.

Where is Bee Creek? I have heard several people talk about it on here but never seen it on a map or or heard anybody talk about it at the lake?

Fished PK on Sat. The north end was full of floaters and foam ,I pray that the GA Bloom is not part of the mixure. GA, I think not. The brazos river chain of lakes (PK, Granbury and Whitney), all got cleaned out pretty darn good with the rains of 2007. GA really only shows it's self in the winter (mainly Jan, Feb and perhaps early March), when the water temp is below 58 degrees. You should not be seeing GA problems right now. All of those lakes should be looking real, real good in about another year or so (look out for 2010). They will all be like new lakes, having been cleaned out and restocked to get the balance of fish just right. If you are seeing something now, I would not think it's GA.

what do you think causes GA? There are many types of Algae and that is a good thing, we need em http://www.otocinclus.com/articles/algae.html Golden Algae is in all lakes and rivers. GA just happens to go "Blooming Nuts" when the water Temp gets below 58 degrees. The other Algae's stop blooming when the water temp gets below 58, but not good old GA. He just keeps reproducing, and left to himself he can kind of over populate. When the water temp gets back to 58 and higher the other Algae's start blooming again and that balances things out. (So that is why you see GA problems showing in late winter, early spring (Jan, Feb, March), water temp below 58 and he has had his free run going on for a while). Somehow the Brazos had too much GA starting in 2000. But with the heavy rains of 2007, I believe it washed lot's of it out and is now back to more normal amounts of GA. Hopefully it will stay that way for a long, long time. Now you know,

One more footnote on Golden Algae, (I should have explained this in the above: Why does it kill fish?) Its the Bloom from GA that causes the problem. The Bloom of the GA is much smaller than the other Algaes. The GA bloom is so small (or really just the right size) that is clogs the gill plates of the fish (all the fish out there), to where they can no longer extract oxygen from the water. All blood creators need oxygen in their blood stream (including fish). Their gill plates (i.e. their Lungs) get clogged up (with too much GA Bloom) and they simply suffocate due to the lack of oxygen. It's kind of funny but fish need to breath too. Too much GA Bloom in the water, all at the same time and there you go (dead fish). I guess stopping to smell the roses in this case can be fatal .

I also heard that Golden Algae uses all the oxygen in the water where as the blue and green algaes add oxygen to the water. Blues and greens don't flourish in cold water so if there are high concentrations of Golgen algae when it is cold there is nothing to keep the water oxygenated therefore suffocating the fish also? Not sure if that is true but it is always what I have heard?

The toxins released from the bloom causes the gills to no longer keep excess water out, causing the fish to drown by suffocation.

Yeah I know...but what causes the excessive GA blooms?..there must be something about the certain systems it affects that allows it to flourish.

What I want to know is what is a floater? If it was a fish then it is an alga bloom? Foam can be caused by many things but floaters on PK are caused by GA.
