Was out at Granger today, and as usual, I got lots of "perch" type bites, eating up my bait.
Is there any way to keep these perch off of DK ?
TIA

Odds are those little nipples are small channel cats. Usually happens to myself. The big ones are close. Just cast in a different direction or towards deeper water. Works for me. We fish Granger alot and it has a good number of little channel cats.

I think they are small channels also and heres why. My wife was throwing some DK's around the trees on Calaveras while I was ten yards ahead of the canoe throwing the cast net. She was having something steal her bait, just barely nibbling it. Thinking it was bream, I threw the net in the area she was casting and lo and behold I pull in five channels around seven to eight inches.

Get the smallest treble hook you can find and an ultralight set up ;-)

Tony - that's exactly what I do at Joe Pool. Small fish, small gear. Little trebles with DK will get those 12-13" channels you're after.
I made the mistake of trying the same approach at Ray Hubbard recently. Setup my ultralight (4lb test) with the little treble and DK and a splitshot. Dropped it near a cormant nest tree. A few minutes later I see out of the corner of my eye my ultralight bend nearly completely over. By the time I grabbed it the fish dove and snapped my line. Stupid plan.
If you think there are good fish in the area, a little heavier tackle is called for...
Take a kid fishing!

Most people I know use Shad for bait. However, like the above guys use the perch.

after being "schooled" by a fellow TFFer on here I now use small number 10 treables for channels... this not only catches the small ones, but 5+ pounders. You will probably have a bigger hook up rate going smaller, I didnt believe it myself (I alsways used num 3 trebbles), then "I was shown the light" lol try it. and then at least you will see if they are perch, or small cats. If you start getting perch then use a few for bait!

Hey, skeeter, I catch the big ones. That's how I know to cast in a different direction. My dad thought me that before he died. Ya'll been doing good on Lake Belton?
