I find it difficult to believe that a stone crab did that to his finger, but I could be wrong as I never collected claws that large.
That is interesting, Have you been pinched by a stone crab? They must have claws for that purpose.
I have free dove and collected hundreds of stone crab claws (around Tampa, Clearwater), and they have always been very docile (nothing like a blue crab), and I normally found them either really early or a few hours before the sunset on oyster beds (they cover their dens/holes with old oyster shells which seems like an ideal place for a moray.
While diving, you could slowy scoop them up in the palm of you hands, and they would grab around your hand (like a braclet). They were never happy when you removed one claw, but I was never pinched by a stone crab. I felt a little gilty at times (until I put some of that meat in garlic butter), because as soon as you removed the claw, they just calmly wanted to get away from you.

Bright side is, he can give "the shocker" with no real effort on his part, what so ever.

You do know stone crabs eat clams and oysters and break there shells clean in half right??This is reaching down in a hole and pulling out a upset crab very little room for error..The one in the pic isnt even the biggest one we got,it was about average. I got one that was bigger than my hand about a month ago..

Man that is F* up. Excuse my french there. That's why I always use crab traps. One way in and they can't get out. Hope your buddy is still doing what he enjoys.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
