I bought a min kota on board charger its a two bank .My question is can I charge three batteries at one time? With the trolling mtr batteries jumperd together if you charge one battery want it charge the other? If not do you think the alternator on the boat will keep the starting battery hot and not need a charger. It a 2004 bass cat with a 225 merc

Are the trolling batteries set up as 24 volt? If so then you can only charge the two trolling batteries with the onboard if it is a two bank. The outboard you have should keep the start battery pretty full unless you don't run it much and you use your electronics alot. If you are on the electronics alot you can always make a short run before heading back to the ramp and that will help keep the battery up.

Thanks jim I looked on the min kota charger web page and you can charge two batteries with one bank it just takes longer.I put clamps on one set of the banks and will charge the tm batteries and then take one and switch it to to the cranking battery

NO NO wait a minute. You can charge two batteries if they are hooked up plus to plus and nega to negative. If the batteries are wired as 24 volts you will burn that charger up. Maybe if you want pm me with phone number and I will do all I can to help

You should just use that charger for your trolling batteries. Your outboard should keep your starting battery charged, Unless like the previous poster stated you make too short of runs and it does not allow enough time for the outboard to charge your starting battery.

I charge my cranking battery every 4 or 5 months just to top it off. How long a run time does it normally take to charge the crank battery off the outboard??

That all depends on how low it is and how big the outboard is.

Listen to Jim. He has forgotten more about batteries and chargers than most of us will ever know. He is a very pleasant person to talk with and can help you with anything dealing with these situations.
