How does one tell the age of a fish?

Look! Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's an EMP!

Ask them. If they tell you their age, then they are males. If they won't tell you their age, then they are females.

Check this website for the aging question. This is the true method to exactly age a fish but other methods can get pretty close.. A lot depends on climate and growing season, up north verses down south.. http://www.floridamarine.org/features/view_article.asp?id=21978

to answer your question you have to look at one of the scales under a electron microscope and count the odilith rings. Sorry for sounding like a nerd; but I have done a lot of that in my younger years.

I'm assuming you are talking about a black bass. Then would it be normal for a person here in Texas that a good average would be one pound per year? That is if you don't have a microscope aboard the boat.

Cut them in two and count the rings.

Biologist check the rings on the scales as mentioned. Me, I can't do it.

How do you age a catfish? Anyone know? There is a way.

In the south fish can put 2 rings on a scale in one year. The most accurate way to tell a fishes age in the south is count the rings on the otolith. Only problem is you have to kill the fish to do that. There has been a lot of work done in Texas on aging fish and I believe there is a chart that will show you age/length.

For black bass, here is an average length for each year. I can't remember the source, but have it scribbled down in a notebook.

1 - 6.8"
2 - 11.6"
3 - 14.0"
4 - 15.8"
5 - 18.1"
6 - 19.7"
