My wife's 2001 F-150 5.4 is dying at stop signs. This is all I really know because she just called me. The truck has about 80,000 and I believe that the fuel filter has been changed. From what she says it seems to be running fine otherwise.

I guess since this is not the Ford Forum I can just go ahead and say that the 5.4 is the biggest pile of %#*& ever made. Even if it is a filter or pump I would still say this.

I can't say that mine has 176K on it! I purchaced mine right before 9/11 01 f-150 5.4, I have 160k on mine. Really the only problem I have had is the coils going out, which is really not a big deal.

I have replaced 2 of those and of course one was the number 8. Pain in the rear.

Take the air cleaner plastic tube off of the throttle body and get some throttle body cleaner. Spray it and wipe out until its clean. Follow directions on can. My 01 Exploder has done this twice in the 140K miles I have had it.
Put the plug in.

As you are facing the engine look to the left rear of the intake near the firewall. There is a tube that connect to the intake and it could have a hole in it or colapsed.

Acronym is IAC. Others have suggested this also. One thing I did find was a fairly dirty air filter. My wife parks pretty close to a crepe mrytle and the air filter actually had flowers in it.

The flowers in the air filter could cause the problem. The IAC and most other computer controls will cause the check engine light to come on. If it is not on you may have found the problem. Should you decide to clean any parts it is wise to consult a manual. Some components require special cleaners and/or procedures.
If the check engine light is on you will need to find someone with a code reader and a book on the vehicle.

I have a 1999 F150, which has it's own set of current problems, but mine would do that at one point, die at a stop. It was the Idle Air Control. Try tapping on it with a wrench or hammer and see if it stops doing it. I was told this by a service writer at a dealership and it worked. He said that carbon builds up in there and restricts flow, by tapping on it you break the carbon loose. I went ahead and replaced mine a few weeks later, it was less than $30 and it took less than 20 minutes to swap out. If it has a check engine light, Autozone will tell you the codes or let me know and I have a power programmer which is also a code reader. I have 160,000 on mine.

Yep, right on about the IAC and the vaccum tube. Got 230K on my 5.4L towing frequently and still running strong........ Some of that towing was on a Suburban and 1/2ton Chevy truck..LOL.....

Cleaned air filter and no more problems. Because it was a morning after a hard rain I think it was just a momentary hiccup. You know how sometimes you can start your truck and it does not idle quite right so you turn it off and back on. The wife said that it was idling funny when she initially started it. Does not change my mind about Fords though. If it was not paid for it would be long gone.
