caught one on a plastic worm...I've been told that they'll hit may flies off the top, but have never tried to catch them that way.

I fish the spillway at Lake o the Pines in east tx. and have caught a lot of crappie on top waters.I use tiny torpedos, zara pups, and have used a lot of small poppers. I like the lime green or the silver blue.I have always fished early, start about an hour before sunrise and have limitd out several times before 7am. fished the lake proper and Caddo lake the sme way, caught lmb and crappie both.BUT whwen the sun hits the water the bite is off.

Hey don, can you get to the spillway without a boat? If you can, how is the best way to do this?

Recently read an article from Todd Huckabee. Says he does a lot of top water crappie fishing and this is what he looks for. V looking lines darting across the top of the water. He says they wont really break the surface. He uses i double tandem jig under a cigar float if i remember right. He also say he can smell em. The smell is from the shad being eaten and usually means feeding fish.

Hope that helps.

I learned to fly fish while living in New Iberia La. fishing for Crappie with flys. They will hit dry flys when fished around overhangs.
