I've been catching blackies in the early morning hours in shallow water, usually 3 to 6 ft, however most of my efforts have been hindered since Ike. There's quite a bit of water steadily creeping away from the banks. Evening top water in the shallows has been a great experience as well.

i would first try a few of the coves located around the bentwater area, as most are easily accessible, and can be found using google maps. If you can find a secluded section of the lake with a bit of cover/submerged debris that leads out to deeper water, you will hit the sweet spot.
furthermore, you will notice using g-maps that the image was taken during the last period of dam reconstruction, meaning the lake was at one of its lowest points, exposing a lot of otherwise submerged sandbars and brush patches. Just putting in my .02

Caney creek i think is pretty good spot for the cats. If you can go deep into that creek (it get shallow) i'm pretty sure you can find a sweet spot. Keep us posted.

I normally catch a bunch of cats every trip. Went about a week ago and got skunked. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Folks seem to keep the area of the main 1097 bridge chummed up for cats between the 22-27th poles countig from the east side.
Tie up, drop a couple of pounds of range cubes straight down and then fish some Cheesebait right where you put the cubes.
You'll most likely get some action almost instantaneously.

I hear you Mr. Whiskers. went this weekend and spent friday nite and saturday on the water. Got SKUNKED for the first time on Conroe. I used worms, liver, hearts, cheese bait you name it and tried Caney Creek, Peach Creek, April Sounds power lines, 1097 bridge and the hole by bulk head island. At least the weather was beautiful and my wife didn't complain about the fish smell on me this time!!!! Better luck next trip......

I like to fish coves and it has been discouraging. The water is down and places that can normally be fished are a waste of time. I did have a good day on Monday the 6th just before a front. I was fishing in 2 ft of water and having success. Haven't had any along shore lines since. Have been catching nice fish in the stumps though. I wish this lake would fill up!

Rayzor are you looking for kitty's or bass? Cranks and spinners sounds like bass. I went out on sunday and found them on a particular pond damn that came up to 6 ft from 12 on both sides. visited the place twice during the day and had great success both times. Gave up my spot to a couple of guys fishing a tournament and not having a great day. Most would say I am dumb for showing a hot area to another fisherman, but if no one ever gave me a few tips on Conroe, I would only be able to catch dock fish. On that side, they are starting to move in a bit. I was broke off three times (shakey head 10lb line) three times on docks as well. If I were in a tourny, I would hit medium depths ( 6-12 Feet w/brush) early to get the bigger bite for the first hour or two. Then fill a limit on the docks with shakey head. Smaller keepers, but fill the limit. Then move back off shore to brush and cull. Just my two cents on Conroe right now.
