We have fished Tawakoni 3 years and have caught alot of sandies. Fished the pump station close to the state park. We would like to fish for hybrids but have been concerned about where to go, how safe it is to get to other locations, what type of lure, what pound test to use, best time of day, etc. We plan to go Sunday and launch out of the state park. Any info would be greatly apprectiated.

try the humps out from holiday marina and the greenville pump station. we catch them trolling with hellbenders and pet spoons but im sure if you are there on sunday there will be plenty of folks just sitting there waiting for the fish to come up.we dont get there as much as we used to but the three or four times a year that we go we usually hook up with a couple of 4 to 7 pound hybrids. If i was lucky enough to go this weekend i would go to holiday first more likely to see hybrids in the schools there and then the greenville pump station but both places are no secret on a sunday morning should be easy to find them. also what we learned about 15 years ago get your bait below the sandbass for the hybrids and stripers.

I surely feel alot more like I do now than I did awhile ago.
WELLGOOD

Catfish is a not considered a fish by my standards. You really could of given me the info I needed and stopped being an annoyance. I have fished all over the country from trout to walleye and have always gotten some helpful info from many people who care about fishing and the fisherman. Quit being a jerk and offer specific help.

I follow the birds at Tawakoni.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

Hiring a guide would help you gain a lot of knowledge in one day - it's almost like cheating.

I can offer a few suggestions for Hybrids/Stripers but this has not been my best year on Tawakoni.

You can chase birds and I occasionally do, but they will drive you crazy. The normal spots are the mouth of Wolf cove, the humps in front of Holiday Marina, Cloud and Sun point and the Stripe at the dam. I'm sure there are many other spots but these are my main targets - I rarely go north of the 2 mile bridge. The key is your electronics - you need to be able to find the fish feeding on the shad. Lately I've been marking a lot of fish but they won't bite.

You can navigate the lake pretty easy just stay out of the middle of the main lake- it's a forest but don't hug the bank either because there are some sneaky sand bars. Get a good map and ask around the lake - most folks will be glad to help you out.

Baits - shad would probably be the best but I have never used live bait - too hard to keep alive. Mostly I bounce TNT, Holiday, or Lead babies slabs off the bottom or swim baits. If you get into a school you can just about throw the anchor and catch fish.

I prefer fishing in the morning but I'm sure the evening is ok. Stripers prefer cloudy days - a bright sunny day with blue sky is not the best.

Don't rule out catfish - Tawakoni is one of the best catfish lakes in this area. I usually take some bait along just in case the stripers are not biting. Last time out we caught around 20 cats in Wolf cove.

This is my .02 cents and thats about all it's worth.

Thanks for the votes of confidence everyone. Right now I would almost suggest trolling with downriggers and staying all day. I found some fish off of Finger Point recently and I have seen and heard of Hybirds and Stripers doing better in the afternoon evening right now rather than the morning.

The high pressure has the wind almost to nothing and that is never good on any lake for Stripers. Add no wind and no clouds and it can be doubly tough. But a guide can at least help you learn the spots and techniques that do work.

the recent weather certainly has fish all over on the move- we trolled in the area of the white stripe saturday- did the tallmean reach, west end of the dam and almost nothing- hit the hump off the terrell pump station and picked up a few (including some undersized stripers)- tried finger point area and picked up a few but the sandies were stacked in thick at the Greenville pump station hump 10-14 feet

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

The big hybrid are going to be in or close to the mid lake timber
you can catch a few good fish during the week on the points, ridges and humps
but on the weekend there's to many of the 200hp motors scattering the shad
the big fish are in the timber year round
just be carefull
in about a month there will be some good fish on the east bank directly across from holiday if the weather cools down
in and around the timber you want big bait like 1 oz hair jigs with 4" trailers
good luck
pm me and the next time i go i will contact

Thanks so much for the info. We are thinking about going this weekend, but we are waiting to see how much the wind is going to be blowing. Let me know when you are going. Where do you launch from? We usually use the state park. Use to launch out of Anchor Inn, but one year we tore up the fiberglass on the boat bumping into the metal posts where my husband picked me up. Cost us 500 to fix it so we are pretty careful about where we launch.
