greetings from louisiana
i just bought a
1991 ranger comanche 391V with a 2000 yahama 200 v-max ox66. 14X26 4 blade prop type unkown.
it has a 12 inch Manuel jack plate not sure of the brand.
motor guide 67# 12/24 volt trolling motor looks almost new not sure of age.
it has hydraulic steering and a screw in drain plug i think these are newer items. not sure
trailer is in very good shape new tires, bunks look all most new and only a few specks of rust on the trailer.
bought it from a man who's father bought it new and died so the son knew very little about it. he said his father had it refurbished about 8 or 10 years ago. he was not sure just what was done but he said it had new carpet.
paid $6200 for it
just want to know every thing good and bad about the boat and motor or up grades that would improve it.
things like
rough water ride
speed and handling.
motor problems

I run a 2000 VMax200 Ox66, just make sure you use "Ring Free" in the gas. I have had no problems with mine.

The Ranger 390 Series was rated for unlimited horsepower when it first came out, and I actually saw one running an Evinrude V-8 on one back in the mid 1980's. I think eventually they down rated them to 250, so the only thing negative I can think of is that it might be underpowered. That said, the 390 was the flagship of the Ranger Fleet back then. It rode well and ran well. I think the ride might be a bit harsh for today's standards, but back then it was one of the finest hulls on the market. There might be those that disagree with me, but it would be very few who actually have a basis of comparison for that era.

You gotta a good deal on a solid boat, though the 300 series hulls weren't known for blazing speed or the best rough water ride.
Nonetheless, the 300 series hulls were one of the most stable, at rest, fishing platforms ever made, and most get on plane quickly.
Good to hear the trailer is in good shape too!
I also have an '01 200 V-Max that has been practically bullet-proof as long as you add a few ounces of Ring-Free to EVERY tank of gas to keep carbon out of the motor and keep that O2 sensor clean.
Might check the batteries if the boat has been sitting a long time.

As others have said 300s are not the fastest. It will handle some pretty rough water though. With the 200 you might want to try something along the lines of a 24 Tempest or Laser II. Of course these are merc props. I am sure that Steve can give you a Yammy prop style that will work. I think that the 26 is too much pitch. I run a 375 with a 23 Tempest or Laser and a 175 with milled heads and bigger exhaust tuner. By myself I turn 5800 - 5900 in summer and close to 6200 in other seasons. I cannot tell you where the prop shaft is relative to the hull but, I am about 4" higher than the transom with a 6" set back.
