Thinkin about taking my heeler fishing with me for the first time. Never had him in the boat, not sure if it would be a good idea... guess we'll see...

You can teach them. It's fun to have them along. I have a brittnay that has fished with me since he was just a few months old. The hard part is when they fall in love with going and you decide to leave them home. Worse than a child sometimes.

my fear is that if i take them out, its dang sure gonna be a hassle to if he jumps outta the boat in the middle of the lake.

We have a Boston Terrier that's been fishing with us for 12 years since she was 6 weeks old. I agree the hardest part is leaving her at home. She knows we're going and believe me we are in the Dog House when we get back for a few days afterwards. I suggest until he gets used to being on the boat and staying in it buy him a life jacket, probably somewhere around 25 dollars for his size. Makes it easier to lift them out of the water.
