I just started reading here, and I am definately going to try carp fishing. But I am reading about all the trouble you guys go to to prep your fishing area with chum. Since corn is a vegetable, I was wondering if you could build a potato cannon for this job. A plug of spud pushed down barrel long enough to hold a can or two of corn, and boom! I suppose you would have to play around to get the distance and spread set-up properly. Just a random idea...

Some people use boilie cannons. Some people even mod paintball guns to shoot boilies. So a corn cannon is something I would love to see!

Hehe, I assure you this idea has been considered very heavily...and is still being considered lol. It's an awesome idea.

You could freeze balls of maize and shoot them out of the cannon! I think I'll stick to a spod though.

I guess there is more than a few things to consider. I think the first would be whether the cannon would be fired by combustion (hairspray) or compressed air like those that fire T-shirts to the crowds. I suspect these air driven cannons are safer and more predictable because whatever is used to pump them up would have a gauge, but maybe they don't go as far. If the chum is hard (say, frozen sweet corn), then it probably wouldn't disintergrate as much. I suppose there are other things like dried beans that might work as well...I suspect you guys know what works. Also, a mortar like configuration (rather than a bazooka) would seem to load chum easier. Finally, the PVA bags that dissolve would certainly help tighten the pattern of delivered chum...maybe too much. There are plans all over the Internet, and even places to buy these.

I love spud cannon a lot and I am certain that after a few beers that shoot corn across the lake would be an absolute riot but I have to wonder of just using a wrist rocket might not be a better way to go.
On a side note...why is it proper to talk about 3 cannon without adding the s but if you drink 3 beers you have to add the s? I would rather be able to say I shoot two deer each year and have also consumed 4 beer as well.

We used to play with tennis ball cannon when we were kids. The tennis ball cannon is simply 3 campbell's soup cans, 2 of which have the top and bottoms cut out with a can opener. Then you take the 3rd can and use a "church key" can opener to punch a lot of holes in it. Then on the very bottom, you make a hole that is just big enough to insert a black cat firecracker. Then you insert the tennis ball all the way and put in your firecracker. Light and fire away. It will shoot a tennis ball a good long ways.
Now, as bored kids, we played with shooting all different things out of you cannon! We shot rotten tomatoes at each other, rock salt, and gravel. We even tried water balloons (didn't work). The way we got the tomatoes and rock salt to work was to take an aerosol paint can lid and insert it into the cannon with the open part up. It fit just perfect. Then put whatever you want to shoot in the cannon and fire away. We could shoot a rotten tomato 75-100 feet!
The only problem with this for you guys fishing would be the littering but bet you could come up with something biodegradable! When we needed even more power, we would use propane or hairspray.
OF COURSE, USE ANY AND ALL OF THIS INFORMATION AT YOUR OWN RISK!
