I am looking to get rid of our 20 year old carpet on the boat. I like the thought of having no carpet. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to paint the fiberglass to make it like the newer cleaner boats? I don’t want it to be totally smooth, there will need to be some sort of pattern for grip when its wet.

Any ideas, advice or previous experiences would be great...

I like the idea of just hosing the boat down after she gets dirty.

This is what I've done. Pull as much of the carpet out by hand, scrap the surface with a paint scraper, puddy knife, then I use a wire brush on a side grinder. It gets real messy but it does the deed. Vaccuum at least 3 times, I then use a paint called Brightside or one called Easy Poxy. One is made by Pettit the other by Interlux. Apply by roller or brush, while wet, sprinkle sand blasting sand or Play sand, on the wet paint. The reason I use those two types of sand is because they don't have clay in it. After it dries, sweep the excess with a house broom and apply second coat. It makes for a sure grip surface, it adhears well, and if it gets nasty and ugly, just repaint. 2 quarts usually does an average boat, runs around $70 for paint and sand.......

I agree but suggest that you use glass micro spheres not sand. They make a professional looking non-skid without the sharp edges and dust that sand creates and spheres are uniform in size. Let the base coat of paint dry and then use masking tape to mask the pattern areas you want on the deck, lay a coat of paint to the unmasked area, use a screen strainer to evenly apply the spheres and let tack out, sweep uneven areas and apply final paint coat and your done. Using a paint sprayer is the easiest way to do this job and get a professional look.

I wonder if you could use rhino liner or herculiner.

and unless I'm mistaken it's also fairly non-skid.

just a concept

Yes, you can do Rhino, but most boats will run $1200 or more for a bedliner place to install it. You can do it less, but remember what a bed liner looks like after it ages 4-5 years, that is exactly what your boat is going to look like!

Follow Mike's advice if you want to get rid of your carpet.

We've been doing non skid floors for years with play sand. Works great, and haven't experienced any problems. Won't slip on it either!

Thanks guys! I think we will do the sand as Mike mentioned. It sounds easy enough, and a good price.

Removing the glue (surface preparation) will be your hardest part of the job regardless of what you install.Bed liners can add alot of weight(typical truck bed-rhino=aprox.80lbs?).You might also consider how hard it will be to remove or repair if it doesn't work out. Good luck

Why not just use Marine Non skid Paint? It already has the grit in it. Comes in lots of colors too. Do a Google search on non skid paint. I remember the coating they would put on the flight deck of the carrier I was stationed on back in the day. That was some tough stuff and gritty as all get out.
