I think at one time or another we all have second guessed ourselves. Sadly it is the one's who make honest mistakes, I believe there are, that get tagged and the repeat offenders that keep getting away.

Jason needs to become a Game Warden and dress like the guy on Reno 911 who wears shorts all the time.

gosh you guys are brutal....I didn't mean every trip...gosh...sorry you haven't ever caught a large hybrid...its really fun...and i have had good luck in returning hybrids to the water no floating ones. You all know, how to blow things so out of portion!!GEZZS There are big fish in TEXAS lakes and they have been caught...I really don't care if you beleive me or not. But just because you haven't doesn't mean this kind of fish doesn't exsist....The lady that has hers on the wall knows it does happen....sorry guys...if you haven't caught the big ones ever...maybe one day, if your karma improves...

yep, keeping undersized hybrids is probably pretty common. I would say that most weekend fisherman cant tell the difference. There isnt a fish that gets put into my box that I dont take a look at. There has been too many times someone wanted to keep a small hybrid thinking it was a big sandy. As for judging weight without a scale. Take for example a 24 inch hybrid, most people would call it 8-10 pounds. What do you think a 24 inch hybrid would weigh? I can tell you with absolute certainty that a 24 inch hybrid will weigh between 6 and 7 pounds. I just had a kid catch one last week that made the new Jr angler record. Here it is, both pictures are of hybrids that are 24 inches in length. the picture below is one that went a tad over 9 pounds

Truly BIG hybrids are like truly BIG stripers - most are loners, very seldom will you find them running in schools with the punks (keepers). They are also looking for larger bait, a lot larger than what most hybrid/striper fisherpeople use plus!
Then there's the forage base - shad aren't the most protein loaded bait fish going. You typically find your larger hybrids/stripers in the rivers below the dams - shad are there but so are protein laden forage like carp and trout.
Check out the top 50 stripers on the TP&W site and see where a majority of the top 10 have come from - rivers below dams where TROUT thrive.
Yes, to catch one of these monsters you have to target them specifically but blind hogs stumble into an acorn now and then meaning there are times when a larger than normal hybrid is caught by someone other than a hybrid fisherman who might be targeting another specie on an isolated area in early morning or late afternoon.

Very true--I have caught alot of hybrids in the 4-7lb range schooling together but much bigger than that they seem to be loners--I dont know if that is just because they are so fewer of them or what---about keeping undersized fish---I was catching shad at Highport before sun up- I think it was last year-- Every throw was full of nice sized threadfins and gizzards--so after about 3 throws I was done. When the sun came up I looked in the livewell and had probably 20 SMALL striper(5inch or so) in the livewell---I about sh**--got them out realllllly quick.

I would say a 24 in hybrid could be anywhere from 4.5 to 7 pounds depending on the fish and time of year...I'm pretty sure you can keep stripers at highport of any size...probably could make a pretty cool fish tank lol...I can't believe this thread is still going on.
