The only way to identify a snake is kill it first, then do a close examination. Most likely it is a Cobra or Rattler.

Why does everybody hate snakes so much? I grew up in a very snaky area of the planet and they are just part of the landscape to me.

None of the snakes in TX are any big deal, just push them out of your way with your fishing rod and keep on fishing.

I have come closer to getting bit by a copperhead while mowing my back yard than I ever have by any snake I encountered while fishing.

I think copperheads are probably the most dangerous snake in TX. They are hard to spot and the biggest danger is that they don't really look that dangerous. BUT, they usually get run off from my fishing areas by the water snakes which are mostly harmless.

Noodle catfish in cottonmouth country and you will learn to hate them.
