Tonight I tried a spot I had tried to find before but failed but had recently heard "interesting" things about. It is a place on the Trinity underneath a bridge ... see the following Google Map.

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=3...mp;t=h&z=19

Parking can be found on the north-west part and it is a simple walk down to the river where there is a concrete ramp next to a small weir. I fished for catfish and bass but skunked for the hour that I was there.

I watched a group of young men fishing with throw nets and having a blast. They were wading and walking in the water and throwing the nets exceptionally well. As I watched, one of them caught a huge golden carp. I'd say it had to have been well over 3lb. Nice clean specimen. Other than that they were netting bass. This was all going on in the pool just down-stream of the weir.

I fished literally under the bridge but ... again ... nothing was happening.

The place was pretty busy and I doubt it could have taken many more folks. There isn't that much space and I can't help but think that it "should" be fished out ... but those chaps with the nets were showing me wrong on that thinking.

I noticed there were a number of homeless folks around including tents and sleeping bags. I'll be honest to say that I was glad that I wasn't alone there. The place was also pretty filthy both in discarded simple trash as well as larger trash items (I counted two trashed full size cars that appear to have been dropped/pushed/crashed over the bridge). I filled two of my large trash bags with discarded trash before I left.

All in all ... not high marks for me. The noise from traffic, the lack of general space, the lack of cleanliness, the potential for lack of safety, the perceived pollution in the water and other factors weigh against it. However, it is 15 minutes from my home, 2 minutes from my RC flying club and covered for when it rains.

I would have called the GW on the guys breaking the law and keeping bass that they caught in the nets, if they were keeping them. Those kind of people will fish out a place for sure.

You know ... I never even considered that ... but I guess you are correct on the law. The guys were indeed keeping them.

Watching them fish, they certainly weren't causing anyone any harm and when I went and chatted to them, they were very friendly. I got the distinct impression that these guys weren't there for "sport" but more there for "dinner". They weren't picky about what was being kept ... their bucket had large and small.

As I say, I can't know for sure, but my belief is that if those chaps were fishing for dinner and eating what comes out of that dirty pool of water ... I am more than inclined to give them a pass and wish them good luck.

I also believe that spot has been fished for a long, long, long time and since they were still pulling fish there ... the supply of fish might continually be being refreshed. Since they were fishing at the bottom of a weir, I am wondering if fish get swept over and kinda "stay" in that area wondering why they can't swim up current any further.

I have used that spot to launch my kayak. I went from Handley to Collins ST. The best fishing on that part of the Trinity is at the water Treatment discharge about 5 miles down river of there. Between Precient line and Greenbelt RD. If you have a kayak or canoe I can show you the spot. Amazing fishing, caught 20in an hour once. No kidding. And the best part is the water is actually clean, clear, and smells like Fabric softner. I think the smell is from the water conditioner they use.

It would be very difficult to get to by foot.
And its surronded by the water treatment plant property, the security guards will run you off. The only legal way to fish it is from the water. Do you have a raft?

No ... but what you are suggesting sounds like fun? Do you have two by any chance? I'll be happy to trade you trips on my boat if you can hook me up with a raft/kayak?

I have two kayaks, but one has a hole in it. I just got the repair kit in the mail. I'll let you know when its ready.

I also have a blow up Coleman Kayak. It is very easy to fish from. But I imagine it will be difficult to get upriver in. You interested in that?

Ive never fished from a kayak (well ... Ive never BEEN in a Kayak) and I'd love the opportunity to do so. If you have two kayaks and would be interested in hosting me for an outing I'd sure love to try that. In return, about all I can offer is an equal outing on Eagle Mountain in my runabout for fishing.

Sounds good. How long of a jon boat are you getting? Do you know of a good place to launch a boat out there?
