The post on the fly ID got me thinking. I need to tie more patterns but with limited knowledge I have a hard time knowing what I can tie. Here is a list of materials I have and the patterns I know.

MATERIALS
saddle hackle and regular hackle
chenille and esdaz
dubbing
cross cut rabbit strips
gold, copper ribbing
peacock hurl
some flashabou in diffrent collors

PATTERNS
cats whiskers
wolly bugger
briminator
guadalupe green
and my new white bass killer

Pictures and or decriptions would help. After words Ill post some pistures of the flys for you guys to comment on and hopefully see how far I have come since my A-Train.
Thanx in advance.
cheers

I am not really sure what your question is. I think you need some bucktail and marabou to add to your material list at least. Do you have Loon's Head Cement or Sally's Hard As Nails? If not I would buy that too. You can make untold numbers of streamers with cheap bucktail....and marabou can make you a ton of stuff as well!

As far as what you can tye...how about seeing what you would like to tye, then see if you have the material for it. There are literally hundreds of patterns. I made a Cat's Whisker last night, but used artic fox for the wing. You CAN make Cat's Whisker with marabou only. I put the bead chain eyes on first, not towards the end. Sometimes you can substitute and the fly is virtually the same. Like I plan to make a fly soon and have a little elk hair, and deer belly hair...if it calls for one of those, and I like the color of the other hair better...I think they two should be close enough in what they are to be used for so I can switch the recipe a bit.

I should add that you need to get some bead chain eyes too...they are very cheap. I got a whole pack for like 1.25.....and they will last a little while. I still haven't used my whole pack yet. Get some ear plugs which are pretty cheap, or Gorilla Glue and make some cheap poppers, or terrestrials...foam from a hobby store for a dollar a huge piece...the possibilities are endless.

Get some mylar tubing and learn the Cypert Minnow. Fish love them. My camera is on the blink right now but you can look up mylar minnow or Cypert Minnow.

Iam in the same boat(or waders) that Alex is in. One thing that I did find is that if you have acess to a bass pro or Cabelas they sell a foam popper kit that has the foam and the hooks for $4.99 and they are simple to make and work like a charm on the water all you need is glue and tail material.

I found this on the net, that is the only real instructions I found. I think it is a good looking pattern and want to try it. What does teased out tubing mean?? Pulled out and stretched?

Oh my I never tease my hair...I thought that stopped in the 50, 60, and 80's!! I do as little to my hair as possible. Besides now that it is almost totally silver...it is much more fluffy....no need for a curling iron either. My mom used to make me sleep with rollers in my hair when I was a little girl...the hard bristle type roller...it was torture. I have never used curlers since I was grown...bad memories of them...ROTFL.

this thing called fly tying has caused me to wander into stores & shops i have never ventured into before...you can get bead chain, sheet of foam, assorted feathers at hobby lobby or michaels, but (i saved the best for last) you can get some really cool glow in the dark thread there too.

I hit the Texoma bass trifecta (Striper, Smallie, and Largemouth) last weekend using a chartreuse leech pattern.

The pattern is easy. I just used a long shank hook (size 2 or 4). It is basically started the same way as a wooly bugger with a few adjustments.

1. Tie in a set of bead chain eyes close to the hook eye allowing room to tie off. This allows the leech to ride hook up. You can also use heavier lead eyes if you want to fish slow and bounce it off the bottom.

2. Tie in the marabou and the flash towards the hook bend as you would a wooly bugger.

3. Tie in the estaz flour (a bulky and flashy chenille) at the back and wrap towards the eyes. Continue to wrap around the eyes in a figure 8 pattern then tie off at the eye of the hook.

It is a simple pattern, but I've found it deadly for bass. Short strips for smallies and largemouths. Strip this fly fairy fast for stripers.

good luck.
