Lost fire to motor... After checking all wiring, started looking around the flywheel and one of the stator banks, (under the flywheel) is burnt crisp and loose.
There has been an ongoing bug for awhile where the motor would not start but after pulling the plugs and checking the wiring the motor would finally fire up.
Does anyone have any input as if the onboard battery charger could of fried one of the stator banks... Any help is appreciated????

John; Mostly old age got your stator. The engine gets extremely hot under that black cowling and Texas sun. That stator is probably a totally incapusalated unit. They get hot and retain heat, the problem has been addressed and all stators now are "open" allowing air to circulate around each coil. But even with that the exciter coils that fire the ignition boxes are still "old School" and have a substance in them that likes to weep. Once that starts happening, It begins to lose voltage output and well, the rest is history. The only way an onboard charger could have caused this is the voltage regulator/rectifier has to short out allowing current to flow thru the recharge coils........highly unlikely but still could happen. Hey it's a 95 model. Your probably not watching the same tv that you had in 95......later

If you're looking for the best price on the part, try googling the part number in quotation marks like "95-12348" (obviously not the part number ) I was able to save over $120 on my tilt trim motor by doing that...Good luck

I have a spare stator it is used but it works I bought one off ebay thinking it was the problem but turned out to be the voltage regulator (Motor ran fine just wasn't charging)I am willing to sell it for what I bought the other off ebay.

For anyone that would like to know the part# for a 92-99 EFI stator is 174-9610K2 and the Sierra Part # is 18-5876. The voltage regulator part# is (2) 194-5279. Power Pack part # is 114-7778. These work on 92-99EFI 200 with motor serial numbers between D082000 - 0G840500.
I know how hard it can be locating the numbers and thought I would post them to help someone else....
Thanks for looking and all the input....

Try to buy new, not rebuilt. I haven't seen very good results with rebuilt stators.

When you lose fire because of the stator, I would be more inclined to replace the switch box`s with the stator than the regulators. I know Mercury recommends this on early models. An onboard charger should not affect the ignition circuits as they are completly separate, only having a common ground. Good Luck

If your voltage regulators are bad and you are overcharging then the heat build up under the flywheel will fry a stator. Check your voltage regulators as well.

One simple way to check the regulator is; Is the tack working, If the needle of the tack is registuring correctly , not pegging out or dead, the regulator is probably working corectly. As the tack reads recharge impusles to the battery, not spark to the sparkplugs.
