I have a question about selling a boat with damage to the keel. It was repaired a 2 years ago, but recently started leaking again. The person I took it to patched it up, but told me that because of where it is at (right in the middle), it is really difficult (and expensive) to fix right.

My question is whether its worth it to spend the money and try to get it fixed right before I sell it, or sell it like it is and let the buyer fix it. Or is a better option to sell just sell the engine (which is in great shape) and the electronics and trolling motor?

BTW - its a 97 skeeter, so even in great shape its probably not going to bring a lot of money.

Sell as-is with full disclosure. Let the buyer make the decision what to do.

Basically take the cost of repairs + 10% or so for the hassle, and start from there.

Take it back to the shop that fixed it the first time. If fixed right should not leak again!

Put a keel protector on it and be done with it.

thanks for the responses. the motor is a 150 merc. It's impact damage - my best guess is it was something like a t-post.

I took the boat back, and he patched it, which lasted about 2 trips. Probably would be worth getting a second opinion.

I would not put a keel protector over it unless I either got it fixed or disclosed to the buyer that there is damage behind it. Take it to a reputable fiberglass repair shop and either get it fixed or get a written quote on the repair. You can be up front with the potential buyer, if you sell it as is, and let them know what it will take to get it fixed.
