 My 4 yo daughter added another species to her list

My 4 yo daughter was learning to cast my ultralight spinning rig Monday while we were out fishing for some schooling sandbass. I thought little of it when she said, "Daddy, I got one!" Then I heard the drag start to sing! I immediately knew she'd hooked one of the long nosed gar we'd seen feeding in the area.  She fought it for about 15 minutes and just couldn't steer it into the net herself so I had to take over and finish getting it in to the boat. As you can imagine, I was very proud of her for casting, hooking and playing the fish for as long as she did. It weighed 11 lbs on the de-liar and was longer than she is tall (she's about 42"). The reel was spooled with 6lb test. She's caught multiple varieties of perch, lmb, channel cat, crappie, sand bass and now a gar. Hope she never changes her mind about fishing, she loves it! The fish was released. Now she wants to know what we can do to help protect the gar!

Cool - my 8 year old daughter recently increased her PB carp to just over 10lb.

Big Ted summed that up! It IS awesome! That's a great fish made even better by the circumstances of the catch! She must already be a "pro" to handle that fish on the gear she had!

Nice work. Watch out though, kids will learn to like the sound of that drag. Next thing you know they'll be fishing for gar and carp.

glad it was released? so It can go eat up more crappie. lol Hubbard Creek has a big problem with gar right now, GW told me if I caught one to not put it back in the lake. I have a really hard time just shooting A fish And not doing something with it.
