Lucked into some channel cats yesterday at the vine. was catching gills, long ears, and greens, with a few small bass, when i started catching channel cats, on woolie buggers. the buggers were tied with a crystal chennille that looks purple in the water. was throwing the fly right up against big boulders, with deeper water nearby. one time i was getting into a little trouble. the area i was fishing was getting real choppy, more that i like in my yak, the wind picked up, and i was getting pushed into the rocks. i threw the fly up against the bank, and hit a good channel cat. boats were going by, and i was fighting the fish with one hand, trying to paddle the yak away from the rocks with the other hand, and keeping my balance by staying in the center of the yak. did manage to land the fish, and stayed away from the rocks. that was a close one.
later, russell

"arrgh matey, have ya ever been out to sea and seen all the fish
there are to see at sea?"

Sheesh! That sounds like quite the experience. To me that would be one I wouldn't have missed but also wouldn't perhaps have put on the wish list.

To me, they fight like dump trucks. Hard pulling, very strong. After a short while it's no doubt who's on the other end!

Russell, I forget, what kayak do you fish out of?

The one and only catfish I caught on a fly rod, I believe was ALSO a woolly bugger. Guess they like 'em!

Nice catch. Do catfish purr?

I tied a couple of buggers this evening and waded into an area known to contain cats, carp, and bass. I caught some bream, and a baby bass as I was reeling in my line.

I suppose I'll have to go deeper to get to the big bass, carp and cats.

i have also been catching tons of cats on grapevine in the cove behind the house out by twin coves. i've had great luck using a pumpkin colored rubber bugger from Orvis http://www.orvis.com/store/productchoice...;subcat_id=6516 seems to be a great multi-catching fly when going subsurface.
