What kind of crane, heron or egret is it? I've never seen one like it before. Sighted it at lake Somerville Texas Saturday August 16th 2008.

Well it's not in my Audubon Handbook of Western Birds.. Egret group had a couple that were close, but definitely not the same.

Correct! It used to be called the Louisiana Heron - offcials want to get away from place names. The tell-tale is that is has yellow legs, as the reddish egret in dark morph has dark legs. See the Sibley Guide, pages 62 and 62.
Birding is better from a yak!!
SnoBoy (not a yankee, it's my trail name) Flyfisher, baitcaster, spinfisherman - just catch the fish, man!

HookLineNsinker,
Beautiful shot, worthy of a professional photographer. I would like to know what make and model of camera you used and the settings.

HookLineNsinker,
Beautiful shot, worthy of a professional photographer. I would like to know what make and model of camera you used and the settings. I'm really not much of a photographer but if I take enough shots sometimes I get lucky.. I took at least 24 shots of the heron as he worked the shore 50 feet or so up in front of me.. Canon Powershot S3/si set to Auto and at full zoom (12x).
