I carry a long stick with a y on the end and catch them and throw them over board! (the y comes in handy to hold their heads down if need be...I hate snakes and mice....used the stick on a mouse before eewwwwww.

The best defence for fending off a "Rattle-Headed Copper-Mouth" is to throw your hands in the air, scream and shout, run around in circles.
It will crawl away in embarassment before you know it.

one day when fishing under some low hanging trees, my girl friend asked me "what are you gonna do if a snake falls out of the trees into the boat or on top of you?"

I replied "I will start pelting the snake with turds!"

She asked " how do you know there will be turds handy in that situation?"

I replied "don't worry, if a snake falls on top of me, there will be turds soon!"

Man, Ive got so many same stories about snakes, and it is a little freighting.

But I finally figured out All Snakes are good. Some just "CAN maybe, maybe" hurt you here in Texas - Our only 4 are - Rattle Snakes, Copper Heads, Corral Snakes and Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin.

Of the 4, only the Cottonmouth/water Moccasin (to me seems to be aggressive (at times)) and is in our waters. The rattlesnakes are the best in that they rattle and say stay way. The copper head scares me the most here in North Texas, just because their only defense is camouflage, and if you step or put you hand on one they have no alternative but to bite. The Correl Snakes is the least concern (for me) in that we just do not have that many here in Texas, and it's a banded snake, Red touches Black friend of Jack, Red touches Yellow - Kill a Fellow, but I've never even seen one.

All the other ones are totally good snakes and can not hurt you (other than you hurting yourself to get away from them).

My wife always, always screams about a snake on the back porch or in the yard and says kill that snake. I always say no, it will move on or I'll move it away, it's a good snake.

Had a beautiful Lime Green Snake about 4 feet long (and I mean beautiful snake) passing the back door just the other day and the wife was hollowing at me to come here, come here. As usual she said kill that snake. She knows me by now (but does not know snakes) and knew I would not kill that beautiful creator.

Really all snakes are good; some will just hurt you (only the 4 mentioned) when they absolutely have to (except for the water moccasin, they can be a little aggressive). All the other probably 900 species here in Texas, will not at all hurt you.

They are Good Snakes,

I don't care if they are a viper are not, I have been biten by a water snake that thought my minow bucket was a good place to get a easy meal. Guess what it hurt like the dickens. So to all those that use minow buckets be carefull when opening it and getting a minow out of it.

snakes can be very benficial, they take care of rats and mice. usually if you don't corner one, they will go their own way, prefering to bypass confrontation. i grew up in the country and i usually leave them alone. we actually had one get into our dishwasher a while back. scared my girlfriend half to death, i pulled him out and let him go out by the barn. as for the coral snake, they are venomous, but they have a very small mouth and it can only bite you like on a finger or toe, their mouths don't open wide like other snakes. i just try to stay away from snakes and let them do what they do. i like having animals around the keep the rodent population down. which is very important in rural areas like where i live.

I've got a Bass Boat that sits low in the water. I had one side of the livewell open. I think he came over the side and went straight for the fish.
