There is a pond off of independence here in plano in a neighborhood park that I fish every once in awhile and today I noticed some white fish swimming around that looked like some kind of cichlid! They werent real aggresive towards lures and then I found abunch of fingerlings in the creek that runs into it, I called my buddy and he brought his cast net and they were all Tilapia! I have never heard of tilapia being stocked in city park ponds!..... What is yalls opinion ??

My neighborhood HOA has stocked Tilapia in order to control some of the aquatic vegetation. I am sure they would appreciate it if they were all thrown back.

Tilapia are really great at controling algae and cleaning up a pond...so I'd be thankful for a smart HOA. They'll be gone this winter, unless the water is warmed somehow.

They also provide lots of forage for bluegills and bass, providing more protein for less money than any other source. Then they die in the winter.

The Tilapia I have seen are either white, or a pale bluish color. It's probably just the strain that you can buy commercially for stocking. The funny thing that I noticed after they were stocked was that the bass would school with them. You just had to aim for the white schools in the water with your lures to catch LMB.

There are blue and white tilapia in the pond behind Davis library. They were probably put in there for weed control. I've caught several while fly fishing there. Can you keep them? Probably so since they'll all die in the winter.

tilapia are good table fair, easy to catch with corn and a small hook. we got them in the 2-3 lb. range in our pond. ( i use #4 or #6 circle hooks) fish

One is now in my pond. The other, if it hasnt been washed in to the Trinity, is in the creek at River Legacy.
