Robin is right. You begin with the targeted fish. Then the types and size flies you want under his nose. Then the type of rod to get that fly to the target.

Example.

Brim in stock ponds.
small dries, nymphs and maybe a small popper.
1wt to 4wt rods

Might want to check out Hook & Hackle for supplies as well.

I don't discriminate when I fish. I'll catch anything that bites smile

I really only fish G-Vine - so what would you suggest?

Well, out on the open lake, in a boat, there are likely sandies and hybrids. So I'd say streamers or big poppers for when they are on top.

Up in the weeds, bluegill and black bass, smaller poppers (and the big ones too) and then smaller stuff, more trout-like flies. Little woolly buggers, briminators, cap spiders, the list goes on.

Bunch of good ideas here http://breambugs.com/ Others will hop in here with their own suggestions as well.

Assigning 1 fly pattern to one fish to avoid overloading, and with an eye to giving you some experiance on various techniques.
I reccomend....

Sand Bass
#4 to #8 Chartreuse/white Clousers. Tie some with bead chain and others with dumbell eyes to get down deeper faster. Can be effective on Hybrids and Black bass. Bluegill will hit small ones.

Hybrids
#2 and #4 Lefty's Decievers in Chart/White, and White/White with a bit of blue on top. You want to imitate a Shad here. On the open lake you will want to fish this on a sinking line to get under the schools where the big boys are. (Will work on Sandies and Black Bass as well.)

Black Bass
#2 and #4 Whooly Buggers in Black or Olive. Some tied as bead heads. (Will work on Sandies in the rivers.)

Bluegill
#14 and #16 Tan Elk hair caddis. (An easy small fly to master and the first fly I caught a fish on. A tan one is just general enough to imitate a lot of insects and its a blast to watch the fish hit on top.)

IMO, Order of difficulty. Easiest to hardest.

Whooly Bugger
Clouser
Deciever
Elk Hair Caddis

Techniques to learn.

Jam knot (All)
Whip finish (All)
Palmering (Body of Whooly Buggers)
Hair stacking (Wings of Clousers and Caddis)
Dubbing (Body of Caddis)
Hair spinning. (Collar of Deciever)

Bass Pro has fly tying classes on Wednesday nights and I think Backwoods in Fort Worth has them also. Ive been tying for a while and you can always learn from watching other folks tie. I started out with a kit from Bass Pro and it progressed from there. The kits are good for beginners and have everything you need, including the video, to tie the flies in them. If you out grow it, get someone else started tying. I have a boy and a girl that sit down and tie with me now. I will be happy to help you out if you need it.

i like the foam ones much better than the bucktail, easier to work with & the finished product looks a lot nicer...skeeter hawks were buzzin all over the lake yesterday, this evening they shall have company.
