here goes a newbie question, but what does the O in 1/o size hook stand for?

As far as I know there is no absolute standard for hooks and measurements. The thing to know is the larger the number the smaller the hook until you get to the ones with the aught 0 behind the number then the larger the number the larger the hook.
For example a size 32 is a lot smaller than a size 4 while a size 1/0 is way smaller than a size 19/0.
