I have a problem with this car that I can not resolve and usually I can. The engine has 73,000 miles on it and it is the 3.0 double overhead cam engine.
About a six weeks ago it started missing at idle and would not throw a code for my code reader and one day it started missing pretty bad for a couple of minutes then stopped and started running great, but the engine light came on and finally I had a code to read in fact I had two, one said miss detected on number cyclinder and the other said miss at under a 1000 RPM,s so I changed all the plugs did not help, I changed the number one spark plug wire did not help, I changed the fuel filter just to be safe and the air filter also still nothing seems to help, it runs good above 1000 RPM,s no problems at all, but it sure is aggrevating when at a stop. I sure would appreciate the help to resolve this.
Thanks James

Try the coil pack. Pretty common problem.

It could also be the mass air flow sensor or a vacuum leak somewhere...My sister's Mazda mini van did just what you described...We thought it was the mass air flow sensor, but it was a damaged vacuum hose and it was a pain to find...

Should have changed all the wires, not just that one.

Yeah, but usually if it throws 2 codes, it's going to be the mass air flow sensor or a vacuum leak....The hard idle, and fine under a load is usually something other than a spark plug, plug wire or coil pack...

Was there any oil on the plug wires? If they were oil, that would cause a missfire.

No oil on the plugs they are as they should be.
As for a vaccume leak, it will be a chore to fine one in this mess of wires, and I will give the mass air flow sensor a look and maybe go ahead and change it to eleminate it be the problem.
Thanks James
