VERY cool! One of my all time favorite fish, in my all time favorite type of spot to fish, a small clear river! AWESOME.

Congrats!

Also, your small mystery fish may be some type of Creek Chub.

Also, I don't believe the mystery fish is a River Redhorse, or any variety of redhorse. ( I think it's a minnow family fish, not a sucker family. )

Here's why. The mouth is all wrong for a River Redhorse. River Redhorse, like most redhorse species, have a mouth that can extend a good deal away from the fish's head, and orients towards the bottom of the river. If the fish is swimming along the river bottom, it can extend it's mouth down like a funnel.

Ever catch a smallmouth buffalo? Know how the mouth sticks all the way out towards the bottom of the lake?

Same thing.

Here's a picture of a river redhorse:

Now, that mouth is completey retracted, and the fish can actually extend it out towards the bottom. You could not thumb that fish's mouth the same way he's thumbing the fish in the picture. And if you did, it's mouth would not open up wide the same way.

Another redhorse picture:

The mouth on the fish he could would be located much more towards the front of the fish's head, where that redhorse's "nose" is, for lack of a better term. The redhorse's mouth is on the very bottom of it's face, literally underneath it.

It's definitely not a river redhorse.

I think it may be a type of Chub. Possibly a Creek Chub or River Chub. I used to catch Creek Chub up north, but I'm not familiar with what species of Chub live in Arkansas.

But here's an example of a type of chub:

Thought that looked like the Kings River. Floated it once back in about 1989.

I'm glad someone knows what it is. My nephew caught a few of them in a river in TN recently. They stayed in a school and were aggressively eating salmon eggs. Nice smallmouth pics by the way.

Recognized all of the slow moving pools. When we floated it, those slow moving areas had Gar as long as our jon boat that was 14'.

I was keeping an eye out for them but i didnt see a single one the whole time we were on the river, maybe the water was too low.

Reminds me of some of the creek fishing I did in MO years ago. Smallies on an ultra-lite is a blast.
