Just purchased a new Lowrance x520 with GPS.

Any suggestions where to mount the transducer and GPS would be appreciated.

Thanks,
KB

What kind of transducer? If it is a puck one, put it just next to the automatic bilge pump. The GPS module can go several places. Usually they are to the right of the driver's side windshield or just behind the driver's right shoulder in front of the right rear storage compartment.

Lowrance calls it a "skimmer" transducer and I do plan to mount it on the outside - I just wasn't sure if I wanted to go all the way down on the pad or mount it higher.

I think for the GPS module I'll mount it close to the back unless there is a good reason not to.

KB,

I have a TR21 and have a skimmer transducer mounted low enough that I can get a good depth reading at all speeds. It probably slows me down a mph or two, but I would rather know if I am coming up on a shallow area or something. I am getting ready to change to a through-hull though.

RB,
I will try to mount it next to the bilge pump as you suggest.

When I asked Bass Pro about installing a through hull transducer, they said it would cost about $250 (remove batteries, gas tanks, etc). Seemed like too much work for me and too much money to have someone install it.

Thanks,
KB

KB,

$250? All you need to do is remove the aluminum sheet that holds the battery charger and remote oil tank. You can access the bilge area then. You can epoxy the transducer then. There is a tube that runs down the right side gunwale from just behind the throttle to about 3 feet from the back of the boat. The gas tank does not have to be removed. To pull the cable, I would run something down that tube front to back, tie/tape the new transducer cables to it and pull it back through. If you want to remove the cranking battery, you will have more room, but it is not absolutely necessary. When I did this on my boat, I used a wire puller to do the cable pulls. Then wire it up and you are done.

I'll defintely take a closer look when I go back to the boat stall. I would prefer to have it mounted inside but not an absolute requirement.

Thanks for all the help.
