I was wondering if anyone has ever put yellow cats (Flat Heads) in a farm pond or stock tank. Will they survive? Any success stories?

I've heard they'll eat up all your forage.

That's one species you only want to put in a pond to either clean it out or only raise flatheads unless the pond is of generous portions...10 or more acres.

I would strongly advise you against this. Flatheads are extremely aggressive and will consume anything, including largemouth bass. I tried to attach a Pond Stocking Manual to help you with your pond stocking needs, but couldn't get it to work. Give me a call and I'll get it to you. 409-384-9572.

my grandad had a great tank/pond when i was growing up. basss crappie, channels, perch. he put 2 small yellows in and thought nothing about it. over a period of 10 or 15 years, the fishing got horrible. we couldnt hardly get a bite, one day he caught one of the yellows, 41 lbs!! a year later or so we caught the other one, 36 lbs. after that, the fishing got better and it returned to the way it used to be.

buster2balls,

That's a great story and a great way to answer the question. Flatheads are the top of the food chain and will dominate a pond and all the other fish in it.

Dan I don't have the means or land to put these fish in a stock tank, I was just kind of wondering. Some day I hope to have some land and put a tank on it and I love catching and eating yellows, even though I am a bass fisherman.

Thanks for all the info and stories, everyone.

Last question is why do they put yellows in the aquarium tanks at Cabela's and bass pro if they are so dominant.

I would not put flatheads in a pond period. Now if it is HUGE, maybe, if that is what you desire. Like someone said, they will eat live fish, and they will eat bass, and the rest of the fish in there as well. I personally would NOT put them in my pond or small lake.
