I know that all bodies of water are different and a big cat in one my be a baby another. So my question is, what is a big cat to you? Please put it in inches and pounds. I will see what yall say and then I will put in my input.

I'd also say a 20 inch channel cat is a big beast for me.

I like 'em ALL. Most of the time I'm not chasing monsters so anything over 10 or 15 lbs is a good one. Since I am not fishing with the heavy tackle for the table cats, a cat in that size range is a lot of fun. My biggest to date is a 48" flathead that weighed more than my scales were good for at the time but she was close to 50 lbs. Table size cats aren't much fun on the Ugly Stick Tiger Rod with the Penn 209 and 65lb braid. I look at a big cat more in reference to my tackle size and expected catch than a flat in inches and pounds thing. I got into a bunch of 3 to 5 lb channel cats a few years ago in the spring while fishing for bluegills with ultra-lite tackle and that day a 7 lb cat was a monster on my 4lb line and 5' perch rod!!!

If you don't know where you are going, don't be surprised if you don't get there.

While the big cats are fun to catch, I can still have fun with 2 plus pounders on lighter line. For me, it's the consistant action that I like. A 2 pounder can give you two decent fillets. I'll tell you what...when you are constantly catching fish in the two pound range, the larger ones are much more fun to catch. the largest I have ever caught (freshwater) was an 8lb. 14oz. channel. That was a lot of fun on r and r. For me, it's watching that bobber go under and setting the hook that makes catching exciting. I don't always get a good hookset and miss the fish, but that's the sport of it all. You guys amaze me with these fish that you consistantly catch that are over 10lbs. Those critters must put up one heck of a fight! I may be lucky someday to catch something that large on a rod and reel combo. I just like the fight!

I agree with ya 100%!
you talk about a fight wait till ya get a 58lb yella on a trotline. some people say runnin lines is no fun and too much work well the people that say that i guess have never ran lines before. we caught a 58 lb yella on a trotline a week or so ago we were in a 18' aluminum lowe the fish pulled the boat around like it was not even there. also when you have a fish on that big and small hooks you take a BIG risk of him bending a hook and getting off. we have lost one that is atleast 20lbs bigger than the 58 and another about the same size to small hooks. (6/0 wide gap hook).

Big fish to me is a big fish bolt lol no The lakes I frequent I would say big fish is 40+lbs and a trophy is 70+lbs. fish. 30-60lbers are pretty common. Rather it being rod and reel or trotlines. Anyone who tells you a trotline is not fun or is not fishing has no clue. But I have to agree since I have been able to catch these monsters on rod and reel it makes you feel good to catch a fish that big on rod and reel in freshwater. Some will never do it in their lifetime. On rod and reel or jug or trotline popcorn
