TXSBHA recieved this from TXDPW this morning.
My name is Monte Brown, and I am a fisheries technician with Texas Parks and
Wildlife in Tyler. I am writing in regards to one of the lakes that we
manage in an attempt to increase public awareness and fishing pressure.
Cooper Lake, located in Delta County, has an outstanding white bass and
hybrid bass fishery, but very little fishing pressure for all species. We
are hoping to increase the fishing pressure on the lake through cooperation
with local fishing guides and anglers, media awareness, and would also like
to extend an invitation to your organization to consider adding Cooper Lake
to your tournament schedule in the future.
Since 1996, Cooper has been stocked with hybrid striped bass on an annual
basis. Due to factors that limit hatchery production and an increasing
demand for hybrid bass fingerlings, TPWD is constantly evaluating which
lakes should receive stockings and at what stocking rate. The justification
for stocking of hybrids is strengthened if angler utilization is good.
Recent articles by outdoor writers Steve Knight and Ray Sasser, highlighted
just what an outstanding fishery Cooper really is. Through correspondence
with local fishing guides, we have learned that 200 fish days on Cooper is
fairly common. On a recent fishing trip, two co-workers and I boated
between 200 and 300 white bass and hybrids. This was duplicated two days
later while meeting with some of the local fishing guides. Our gill net
data for the lake also indicates the abundance of hybrid and white bass in
Cooper Lake. Catch rates for both species were significantly higher in
Cooper Lake compared to other lakes in the area.
Cooper Lake also has above average facilities and is conveniently located
for a tournament stop or just a weekend trip to the lake. There are two
State Park units with ample camping facilities and parking for a tournament
venue. The lake is less than an hour drive from Greenville, Commerce,
Paris, and Sulphur Springs and around an hour and a half from the
Dallas-Fort Worth area.
We believe this fishery is one of the best in the state, but highly
underutilized. Our goal is to promote this fishery and continue future
stocking of hybrid striped bass in the reservoir. We believe adding Cooper
Lake to your current tournament schedule would help us to showcase the
excellent hybrid and white bass fishing opportunities on the lake. I have
included the names and phone numbers for some of the guides and some
information on lodging. If you have any questions or suggestions on ways to
increase angler interest in Cooper Lake, please feel free to contact us.
