First let me say thanks to all of you who responded to my previous post about "Surf Fishing Advice" for my upcoming trip to Crystal Beach. This forum never ceases to amaze me when it comes to the number of down right great people looking to help their fellow anglers. clap

I have taken your advice and I have equipped myself with the following:

3" Berkley Gulp Shrimp (New Penny)
2 Zara Spooks
3 Gold Spoons
5" Berkley Jerk Shad (Mullet)
Red Circle Hooks
Popping Corks
1/8 oz jig heads in red and white

What I'm looking for now is a detailed description of how to rig and retrieve the shrimp / jerk shad. I would assume that I would retrieve the shad just as if I was bass fishing but I could be way off. I have no clue how to go about rigging the shrimp.

If you didn't read my original post, I will be fishing in Crystal Beach the first week of August. I'm looking to catch ANYTHING. I will be wade fishing and trying out what I believe to be freshwater lagoons behind the beach house. I think there are redfish in there. I've seen fishing moving around in the shallows but I don't know what they are.

Again any advice would be appreciated on rigging and retrieving.

i had luck with the new penny on a jig head under a rattling float...gulp was about 18 in below the rattlin float...if your fishing shallow, i wouldn't use the cork...could spook the fish

pray for your local LAW ENFORCEMENT

Fish the gulp under one of these. Tie an 18 to 24 inch 20Lb leader and then 'pop-pop' the cork to simulate a feeding fish, then let the gulp sit for say 20 to 30 seconds. The gulp scent needs time to work, so let it and the sound of the cork work. See http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0036747318789a.shtml
Here is another cork that you can cast a very long way: http://www.randrhiwaybaitstand.com/id21.htm
If you see fish moving in shallow water, throw either the Shrimp or the shad - also any Zoom shad, or Gambler flappin shad will get'em too- , just lead the fish a bit. If they are reds then they should eat it. Also if grassy try a spinner bait, buzz bait, or event a Ribbit frog - nothing like having a 'big head' blow up on one of these.
