Was thinking of dropping the kayak in at a buddies house on Hubbard north of Hwy66 next Friday night to throw some big poppers or mouse patterns under the full moon basically because it is the only chance I'll get with two daughters under 3 at home. Anyone else ever tried this and how did you do?

Use black poppers at night.

I have streamken, but for some reason havent had muck luck in big lakes. Ive caught a few at Fork, but at Hubbard have tried a few times by the rocks at the powerplant, and also by the Marina rocks at I-30 and havent had any luck. Also I think this time of year, they are probably mostly south of I-30... I could be wrong, but that's what I remember reading from the bass fishing section posts.
BUT smaller bodies of water have been real good for me fishing poppers at night. Golf course ponds, and smaller lakes for some reason have been alot better.
Send me a PM. I am in the same boat as you ... 4 kids, 2mo, 2yrm, 5yr, 7yr. so I mostly fish at night. Assuming you live by the eastern part of the metroplex, maybe we can fish sometime.

Poppers at night, what a delight!

I attend night time top water seminars, hosted by myself, at a local pond at least once a week. The fish are apparently more active and aggressive at night. Makes sense to me, less danger from above and easier hunting for an ambush hunter.

I have not found color personally to make any difference. My best success has been on raw deer hair Muddlers. But whatever you have confidence in is best.

Thanks all. I have never fished Hubbard at all but it's been my experience the key with poppers day or night, salt or fresh, is not the color but the action. It seems that if the conditions favor the top water bugs, they are going to hit it. I have caught many a trout under the August full moon on mouse patterns so i figure I'd give it a whirl with the bass.

ccabal - I learned long ago that the best way to learn to fly fish is to fish with someone who knows what they are doing and the best way to catch fish is to fish with someone who knows the area. I would love to learn from you. Sending PM now.
