Motor is an 87 Yamaha 40 horse.

Boat will push itself at idle. When I throttle it up the motor revs but boat does not go anywhere. Thought is was a prop hub but not sure.

When not running and by hand, I can put the boat in drive and turn the prop easily by hand clockwise with a clicking noise. When I put it in reverse I can not turn it either way without using allot of force.

Does this sound like the prop or lower unit?

Thanks.

yep, spun hub.

wait a minute.. you said you can turn the prop by hand, but is the prop shaft turning with it??? if the prop shaft is turning with the prop, then you may have lower unit problems.

pull the lower drain plug and inspect for metal shavings.

I don't really know anything about the prop/lower unit. How come I can turn it in drive but not in reverse? Also, when I turn it the prop shaft turns with the prop.

Thanks

you may have hurt the forward gear, or clutch dog.

if the control box is in gear, and you can turn the prop and the shaft moves with it. THAT AINT GOOD.
i do know some gear cases are ratcheting cases and will move. I don't know about yours.
maybe one of the techs on here can let ya know about that!

i still think you should pull the lower oil drain plug and see if there's any metal in the gear oil.
