Restaurateur helps relieve gas pain

In an effort to alleviate pain at the pump and encourage residents to eat out, Weatherford Downtown Caf� owner Britton Schweitzer is giving away a $50 gas card daily for two weeks.

Every morning from Monday, July 14, through Sunday, July 27, a table and time will be randomly selected by Schweitzer and those who happen to be sitting at the designated table at the pre-determined time will be given a $50 gas card. To go orders are also eligible.

"It�s going to be really random, that way there�s no rhyme or reason; the staff won�t even know until I say it," Schweitzer said. "For that matter, what I might do is when I wake up in the morning ask my wife to give me a time and a number [or I may] just say the next to go order gets it."

Schweitzer said he came up with the idea while watching TV.

"I saw something about two gas stations � one was [selling gas for] $3.36 and one was $3.37 � and how all these people were just blocking up the street and I was like, 'You know the value of a gas card goes pretty far these days.�"

He added that the goal is to get new faces in the restaurant.

"We have a lot of regulars but I want people to try out the new menu so I think it�s kind-of a win-win for everybody," he said. "When I first thought of this about a week ago, I was telling my special event gal and a couple of other people and they were like you really don�t need the business, it�s already crazy over there. But I think it�s a good way I can give back a little bit."

Schweitzer said he doesn�t know where he�ll get the gas cards but that it would be someplace easily accessible.

Downtown Caf� is located on the Square at 101 West Church Street in Weatherford. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon.
