Have to agree with Heath here. I use 10lb Berkeley big game on all of my reels. Don't have to worry about breaking the line on fish or breaking off on brush piles. Give a little tug and the jigs I use straighten out. Bend the hook back with a pair of needle nose and back to fishing. The crappie in Granger are not line shy and I doubt they are in any lakes. Can also land the occasional cat with no problem. Tried the WM hi vis 6 lb and did not like it at all. I always lost my jigs with that stuff. My 2 cents.

Keep on fishing.

Pro's will say to change mono as often as you can afford too.

I'll use 2-4 tests on my rigs and that's all I'd ever concider.
6 test is like cable. Your casting distance drops severely with 6 test.
In the spring when I'm run'n and gun'n covering mega water tryng to locate those schools 6 test would really hinder me ,not to mention they are so spooky and I'd have to get close to reach them.
1 bang of the boat and SEEYA!
I know you guys down south fish mega stumps.
I can see why you'd go to heavier line.
For big fish......there's a thing called a drag on your reel.

Had a guy in the boat today from MN. He found out real quick that that 4# ultra light was no use around timber.
First tree he had ever seen in a lake was today rolfmao

You guys down south probally never get water temps to drop into the 40's or 50's much so you can get away with thicker line with heavier jigs not having to downsize or get into finesse fishing.
We also do not have near the wood in the water either.
If I use the kinds of line on my 100th or 80th oz jigs I doubt I could clear the gunnle.

It's different in clear water.
I got a taste of it in Arkansas at a classic once.
You could see 13' and they were spooky to say the least.

Had to make long casts with small baits. The guys that one the tournament were using 1# sewing thread shooting docks.

Just one more thing.

So far since going to #6 Mr Crappie hi vis line I have been broken off once by what I assume was a very large catfish that spooled me and swam into a boathouse where I couldn't follow him. I have also landed two large bass with the light line, the smallest of the two was almost 8 lbs and the other one ??? (I'm not even going there, you wouldn't beleive it anyway)

The deal is with light line is to change the line often and retie your knots very often especially after they have been strained from hang ups, or after catching large fish, or several nice fish. I generally remove about 3ft of line when I retie my hook or at least run my fingers over the tag line to feel for nicks or abrasions.

It seems like a lot of work and I guess it is. But it's worth it! I beleive you get better preformance from light line and tackle, and I think more fish are taken with light line than heavy. I use #6, but #8, #10, and #12 I would not classify as heavy. But line maintance is a must! YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED FOR THAT RECORD FISH! and if you lose that record fish you know it wasn't because of your line or equipment, Yeal, I'm a serious fisherman...LOL

You get a more natural presentation on your jig with the lighter line. The heavier line takes alot of this out. With minnows, I will use 12#-15# line. I read an article from one of the top Crappie fishermen in In-Fisherman. To use the solar line. Crappie are curious by nature. I had always used one on my minnow rigs and felt we got more bites. This was before I had read the article. I bought some 6# Trilene XT Solar and started increasing my jig catches. I have moved on to Trilene Solar IronSilk(hard to find) now. Give it a try. Also, some form of a loop knot for your jigs(more natural horizontal presentation), and put two on, about 12" - 18" apart.
