Anyone read the Sept issue of Fly Fisherman? Certainly informative about catching carp on a fly. It's no wonder I haven't done well. Been doing it all wrong according to him.

he makes carp fishing sound difficult. If it is so hard what is the allure?

Well... the difficulty IS the allure. As a fly fisherman, there's a certain satisfaction in tricking spooky fish to take a fly. I've said it many times, if it were incredibly easy to catch fish, I wouldn't be a fisherman. Not to mention the fact that carp are great fighters once hooked. (They make alot of runs)

Whitlock got much of his carp fishing education on breaks from teaching fly fishing classes in Wisconsin. He'd fish the "flats" along the western shore of Lake Michigan, where you have clear water, miles of rock "flats," and huge tailing carp. The unique water clarity and bottom conditions make them quite wary. When you hook one, they can rip a couple hundred yards of line and backing off your reel.

The one thing that's common among the carp fishing elite (Whitlock, Brad Befus, LHD) is that their flies are very similar.

The LHD Sucker Punch

is a great example of a quintessential carp fly.

I wouldn't invest in them. They may work down under, but might have limited applicability in the US.

I tried for carp today at the dam. I used a few things. One fly I just knew looked good for carp was a white mini muddler size 12. All I caught was a sunfish with it. I used my crawfish too thinking something may hit it where the spillway was coming in...just a couple of pecks at it. There was tons of sunfish by the rocks today... I mean tons. They wouldn't leave my flies alone. Then I tried another fly...looks almost like a cricket...before giving up. I heard a lady caught a twenty pound flathead on a cricket out there a few days ago. Well...then I went to the Sabine for an hour...trying to get something else like a carp or something like it...something different...not even a nibble. All I caught was a stick......LOL. Last night I caught a couple of catfish, and my son caught a sunfish. There was a mayfly hatch going on...I've never seen so many mayflies in my LIFE. It was eery.

i was at bps yesterday and managed to get rid of some extra cash on hand, bought a selection of "raineys carp flies", i guess this carp deal is sight fishing...so if the oppurtunity arises, i may be ready, if not they look like good panfish flies.

Nice! And yes, I imagine that there will be plenty of "annoyance" form bass and bream whilst fishing those!
