I would like to go to CO for first time. I have been to a few web sites such as Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne. They seem to be pretty good from what I read. I am looking for guide info and places to stay.

Thanks,

Hey that place is a tourist trap like sixth street is to Austin. If you want the ultimate CO experience go to the Black Canyon National park outside of Montrose. Out of all my CO fishing adventures, nothing even compared to the quality of fishing and the solitude. The rivers in and around Silverthorn and Dillon(basically the whole I-70 valley from Idaho springs to Eagle are heavily fished and no place for any one but a tried and true hard core local with a lot of spare time and years on the river) have very educated fish. And even if you do find a good pool doesn't a factory outlet kind of ruin your scenic Colorado vacation. If you want to to that you might as well fish Lake Austin on a Saturday afternoon in July. And living in Dripping you should understand the ridiculousness of that. Of Of all the times I have been in the Canyon the only human beings that were visible were across the river a half mile away and that was the only time. There are plenty of Guides that will take you there in Montrose and Gunnison. The only reason I would suggest you not do it if you are out of shape or have a serious health condition that limits you physical activity. The hike down takes 45 min, back up is three hours at least being the canyon is steep. There is primitive camping but no amenities{toilets or designated campgrounds}but if you are up to it the is not a more beautiful fishery in the world with the most brilliant colored 16" or bigger bow's you have ever seen. Bring a camera for sure. And one last thing the river is deep and un-wadeable so don't make the mistake i did on my maiden voyage and wear your waders, as it is pointless. Hope you have a great time in colorful Colorado!

Cutthroat is not my favorite shop in Colorado.

I would go with Fly Fishing Outfitters in Avon (Alvin Dedeaux works there in the summers), Frying Pan Anglers in Basalt and Breckenridge Outfitters as good shops on the West Slope. If you want some small stream, consider Kirk's Fly Shop in Estes Park for trips into Rocky Mountain National Park. If you are wanting someting inclusive (and private water) Elktrout Lodge is a good choice, too.

Disclaimer: I guide for Elktrout in the summers and am somewhat biased to my waters, but know guys at FFO, Pan Anglers, Breck and Kirk's and know that they do good jobs for their clients.

If you can, pick a weekday to take the trip as weekends get pretty busy up here.
