I've heard people using bullhead for flathead.

My question is...

Anyone have tips for catching them / trapping them?

What kind of water do you target?

If anyone catches bullhead for bait - your input would be great.

Kansasmedic, I lived in Olathe for 20 years, still own land and a 4 acre pond in Lynn County. Where you at? I still make it up several times a year to fish the Marais De Cynge, always good for big blues. As for bullhead, we could catch them in any small creek around Olathe using worms.

I am in Montgomery County. Independence Kansas.

I caught bull heads out of a pond once as a youngster.

I was looking for tips on how to become efficiant at it.

Olathe is up by KCK - right?

Were quite a distance from there.

If you go east from the Kansas - Oklahoma - Missouri state corners, your in Labette county and the Mongomery county.

If you can find a body of water (private or public) and set a perch trap (be sure to check your state's requirements on them for public waters before using), either use dog food, old-dry bread and set it in the backwaters or in a shaded spot. Don't check it for 24 hours.

You can also use a #1 hook with beef hearts, liver, kidney, shrimp for bullheads in farm ponds, creeks, backwaters where they tend to inhabit.

Good luck!

bullheads are very quick to swallow the hook thus ruining them for live bait ... hold your rod in hand to set as soon as they pick it up or maybe use circle ... i usta use 2/0 hooks, seemed to help cut down on the swallowing, they have a big mouth

as has been mentioned any perch trap will work but be sure to have the bait where they can't get to it ... bullheads will eat until there is nothing left

The 2/0 circle hook is great for bullheads. If you happen to kill one, just fillet him, leave the hide on and cut in strips. Big blues love these things.
