Curious if others remove gas line and run gas out of their 2 strokes with oil injection. Also would you still do it even when planning on going out within 24 or 48hours. Reason I ask is it takes a long time at idle to run gas out of the carbs on my 2 stroke 50hp and that restricted fuel alarm is so annoying. Honestly it takes at least 3 mins of that buzzing to run the gas out of the carbs on mine. I know it would be faster if I rev the engine but even at idle the water squirting out of the port gets pretty warm after a couple of mins and I don't want to hurt the motor.

You're already damaging the motor doing what you are doing now. What you are doing is fine with single cylinder 2 stroke equipment. On multiple cylinder/carb engines not all of the carbs empty out at the same time. While the other(s) are still firing, one or more cylinder may be dry lacking all lubrication which is not healthy for a two stroke.
If it is going to be sitting, use a fuel stabilizer.

Hip-hip Horray!!!! Cast Net is dead on. NEVER---NEVER run a multiple carbed motor "out of fuel" In the first place you can't "RUN IT OUT OF FUEL" When the fuel drops below the holes in the emulsion tube, it breaks the siphon effect and, stops picking up fuel. Hence forth : you have now created a larger area inside the fuel bowl, for fuel to evaporate in and leave it's nasty additives. BAD JU-JU!

If ain't a late model Merc, I usually have very little to say. Sometimes even a blind pig finds an acorn.

well, I have been using stabil and not burning it out except for winter mainly because of the annoying alarm. Sounds like that alarm kept me from doing something that could hurt the motor. Thanks for the info! Oh and should have mentioned it is a 2001 merc 50hp 2-stroke.

run the gas out and you run the lube out , if you think your gonna let it set for any length of time just run some stabil in the fuel

how much sitting would require stabilizer? if it sits in dry storage for 2 weeks without running, is that too long? The guy i just bought my boat from told me to run the engine out if its not going to be used, 3 cylinder 1978 johnson 70hp, good thing i ran across this post! maybe this is part of the reason they had to rebuild it 2 years ago.

Oldrock, I could be mistaken, but I believe a continous tone is not fuel restriction, it's the overtemp warning, and it's not an "early warning system" either, it means you're overheating *right now!*
Fry, those johnnyrude triples are about as good as they get, but the top carb will run dry before the bottom, then it gets dragged through a dry hole.
Two months is ok, three months is probably ok, more than that might be pushing your luck. Six months means a likely carb rebuild. I put an ounce of seafoam per gallon in every tank.
This is just my opinion, supported by my recollection of my experience, which might or might not be accurate. Actual results may vary.

Do not run the gas out. Just buy a some stabil or 2+2 or seafoam and put some in the tank. Been doing it for years and never had a problem. I DO tilt my engine up pretty far when it's trailered, though. ( transom saver)
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

dang it, I wish I had asked first... I spent the day on the lake today and boat was running great until the last run back to the ramp. I decided I would really open it up and trim the boat out for max speed. Everything running beautifully and then that alarm goes off. I of course show down right away and look to see if water still squirting out of engine. Everything seems fine. Engine was just warm, oil in sight glass was at half and engine wasn't smoking at idle and seemed to be running just fine. So I lowered the trim and slowly reved motor back up. All good right up until I get to about 5000rpms and then the alarm goes off again. I slow down to idle and alarm stops after about 30 seconds. I run rest of way back at about 4000rpms and no alarm.
SO, what do the experts make of this? Think it is time for a new impeller? Was changed about 2 years ago and water flow seems to work fine although it does take about a minute to start when I first fire up the engine. Maybe it needs a water pump? Maybe alarm is something else entirely? Again, engine is running perfectly. No loss of power and will idle at 750rpms no problem.

one thing to add, could it maybe a fuel warning and not the temp? Reason I ask is the alarm goes off the second I disconnect the gas line when motor is running. I would think if it was a overheat warning, it would not go off immediately. I am hoping maybe it just needs a new gas line connector or something simple?
