I can't handle it for crappie - i find quiet water or go home. To me that's just crazy. I guess I'm a wimp!
If it's sandbass or stripers you might be able to stay on them, but staying on a brushpile is way too hard for me. All that does is piss me off.

The other day I was out with the family fishing and couldn't stay on my pile for nothing, so I dug out the trusty anchor and made a good evening out of it. Heck it was so relaxed I will definitely be using it a lot more. Modern conveniences (like trolling motors) are really nice but sometimes not the best way.

Anchors are great in these circumstances. There are alot of poeple that don't use them for whatever reason. Anchor up upwind of the brush pile and allow the boat to swing over the pile. Works great and allows you to focus on your fishing and hadle the other folks in the boat as well, kiddos especially. I have a coupld of friends that use anchors often...and the more they use them, the more they love them. There are other crappie fishermen who don'e own one...

You just really have to be careful with anchors. We told a couple of folks about our piles in some areas and they tried to anchor fish, but kept hanging their anchors and scattering the brush. A spot that has produced 60 keepers in a 15 foot circle before now may produce up to 5 on a really good day.

I won't risk tearing up a brushpile. If I can't stay on it with the TM, I go somewhere else.

I will be anchoring in the morning using 2 jigs to hold the light line down no need to jig the boat will do the work. I'm tire of not fishing sence last Sunday. Gotta go try.

Man lwl96a, what a bummer. To get a pile like that takes a lot of work to have somebody else wreck it.
Bluwave Mike if you try the anchor route keep in mind that most store bought anchors will not hold in windy conditions especially the mushroom anchors. I built my own and have never had a problem holding. Use enough rope to get a least a 45 deg angle on the line and when you start to pull it up don't take your time.

I don't like to fish in wind like this but sometimes I have to. No matter what the wind is doing I NEVER ANCHOR!!!! I just turn up the trolling motor and use 1/4oz. jigs. Anchoring does two things, first it tears up the structure that you're fishing, second it keeps you in one spot both of which are bad things to do when crappie fishing. You don't want to sit in one spot and wait for the fish to (so called bite) keep on the move and find fish that will bite instantlly. It's not easy, but just like anything you do in life the more you do it the better you'll get. If one 1/4oz. jig isn't enough tie on two that for sure will keep you down and catch some fish. GoodLuck CrappieMaster
