I've caught them in deeper water (~14') early in the am, while throwing my net off a boat launch pier.

(this was on Lewisville, but I assume they hang out in deeper water like that in other lakes at night).

the particular place I caught them (again this morning) is in a long, skinny cove. Dunno if that helps you or not.

I caught them at 4:30am on a ramp at lewisville last weekend. There was a street light over head that put out a little light, but the shad were thick. Two throws and I had enough.

It shouldn't be to early. I usually catch em at 6:00am on Hubbard around boatramps.

if you know of a boat ramp with a street light right over it and the wind blowing towards the boat ramp there's usually always shad around in the middle of the night and in high numbers because of three things ... the wind blowing that direction for one, two boat docks have a high attraction to them because they're a big flat surface covered with green algae that they feed on. the algae may be what they're feeding on or there may be a high number of zooplankton feeding on the algae and in turn shad feeding on the zooplankton and the third thing ... the light seems to draw them also ... used to down below keystone when the water wasn't running and they had that big flood light on on the end of the south side retainer wall the shad would ball up in there real thick just because of that light ... couldn't find them anywhere else either and they'd get thinner the further away from the light that you threw your net.
