Turtles like to start with the gills first from what I've seen. I've also seen otters clean out an entire (small) pond in one night and catch ducks by coming up underneath them and holding on. The mammals just nibble though. My guess would be a huge turtle or a gator.

Turtle or Small Gator (large one would just yank the entire fish off), doesn't sound like Gar nor a large catfish.

Woke up to a beaver swimming around my boat looking for the splashing noise from my stringer of cats. Just thought I would throw that in the mix for future reference...USE THE LIVEWELL OR PUT THEM IN THE ICECHEST AT NIGHT. Im guessing a turtle got your cats.
