It is a gas that is emitted from rotting vegetation. I have heard a couple of old timers refer to this as swamp gas. My grandfather told me once when he was younger, he was hunting raccoons one night alone and he saw a semi bright glow literally come out of the water very slowly and just sorta hover around in the air for a little while. And after a few minutes is just kinda dissipated away.

I think you should try and bite the bubble next time and let us know how it smells and taste. We can then give a clearer answer.
