"Also get some secret 7 catfish bait and that will increase you chances even more"
I usually catfish with cut perch and minnows (I haven't seen anyone sell shad anywhere near Austin). I've also been using the regular walmart/academy packaged dough baits on a regular j hook but I'm interested in trying something different.
Do you use a treble hook with a sponge on it for Secret 7?
I saw Danny Kings in a bait shop near Canyon Lake but didn't know which hook set up to use as I'm unfamiliar with anything that isn't the typical (dough based) stinkbaits you can find just about anywhere.

If you use the secret 7 bait, they have some special hooks to hold the bait on. here is a link to a value pack which has everything to get you started. http://www.teamcatfish.com/store/product...281dbaeed95968a If you get this, then you will have everything to get started except the bobbers. All I can say is once you throw your hook in the water, you better hold on to your pole!!!! Hope this helps and if you call and order the value pack, tell Jeff I sent ya and he will treat you right. - Charles

Thanks a lot for the help -- I'll definitely look into it. And I'll tell Jeff about the referral if I decide to go that route.
