I caught this fish in the creek not far from where I live. I am wondering if this is a green sunfish hybridized with a warmouth? I see it does not have vertical stripes, and it also resembles a warmouth to me. What do the resident experts say?

It was 7" long if that helps at all.

Yes it was a beauty of a fish, very cool, and I loved the coloring. My camera didn't do the thing justice.

I guess I should add the fish is back in the creek, catch and release. I wouldn't eat fish out of the creeks around here anyways...hehehe. But I try to put beauties back to keep those populations up. :-)

I catch 10+ inch pure green sunfish in the creek by my house with some regularity (or at least did right before they bulldozed half of it), is that pretty uncommon elsewhere? Biggest one I have caught was about 11-11.5 inches.

Blue Fox jig is what I caught mine on.

10" are huge. They don't get that big here, that I have seen.

The Texas State record from public waters for green sunfish(GSF)is 11 inches...so that 11.5 inch fish, Mason, would have been a State Record.

In small creeks, a 7 inch GSF is king of the hill, in my experience. I've caught and documented 11 inch green sunfish hybrids from ponds, but have never caught a pure GSF from a creek equal to Kelkay's...IMO that's a prize fish.

Wow, I had no idea that my fish was a prize fish for it's kind. Thanks for letting me know that. If 11 inches was the record, I must of been really close to it once. I caught one close to that at Caddo Lake.
