Hey all,
We are in the north austin area, and every year for fathers day we go on a weekend camping trip, just me and the boys
they are ages 11, and 12, and LOVE to catfish
we have been out with cliff a few times (Hes the best around) and he recommended choke canyon
its kind of a far drive for us, so im wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.
we catfish using DKs original and blood, and want to try fishing at night.
Thanx, im just trying to build strong bonds with my sons, and give them a better childhood than i had.

I've heard that Lake Whitney has some good kittys in it. I've never fished it for kittys but I have been wanting to for some time. I don't think that would be too far a drive for ya it's just outside of Hillsboro. I know they have some nice camping areas.

Lake Brownwood has a good state park and very nice cats in the lake. Don't know how far your limit is on mileage but a very nice place to camp and night fish.

Lake Waco would be another good spot but it would be alot better if you had a boat. The parks were pretty nice their when I lived there. I would suggest another great thing if you go to Whitney. Check out www.dickscanoes.com . They rent canoes for a good price and you can take in some awesome scenery below the dam.

CJ , if you're in my neck of the woods ( pflugerville ) , if you want to stay close to austin ..then hit lake travis off 1431. Turkey bend park , is nice..if you get their early b/4 the weekend folks you can find a good whole.. take a drive before you go out their and scout you a spot. it just 10 miles west of lago vista of 1431..

One of my favorite lakes down your way is Inks. You can stay at Inks Lake State Park and be surrounded by the most incredible scenery anywhere. I've caught some good channels out of the lake and you can also go to Lake Buchanan.
If your boys like to ride bikes, I would definitely suggest this park. Lots of roads, trails, and granite hillsides to ride. Camp sites right on the water to do your night fishing from. Wildlife everywhere. The caverns are close if you want to do some cave exploration on your trip.

I would have to agree with Inks. I did a fair amount of camping growing up and the trip to Inks was by far my favorite. I haven't been there in 10 years but the deer walking across your campsite and feeding them with your hands was just awesome. Plus they had a good dock for fishing.

Lake Belton is a good catfish lake. Its just east of Fort Hood. Shad are very easy to come by also. If you have a cast net. Good Luck.
