I just wanted to ask real fast if you can use braid on a spinning reel? I remember being told early on that you can't.

just make sure you put some mono backing on first, braid will slip on the spool

If you were told you can't you were told wrong.
I've been using braided line on my crappie spinning reels for years, I'd be lost without it.
I probably increased my hooksets by 50% when I switched from mono.
One of my favorite reasons (there are many) for using braid is the line practically floats, eliminating the slack you get in your line, especially in windy weather.
I prefer fireline and for me it's worth the extra money.
I've got several reels that have had the same fireline on them for a few years.
I'd recommend starting out with 20 yards of mono then tying on the braid to the mono.

You can use it on a spinning reel with no problems. Just be sure to use a mono backing.

Hard to beat a quality 14-15lb briad on a spinning reel. I top it off with a 8-10lb fluoro leader for an awesome setup.

One other great benefit is that you don't get twist and loops in braid like you do mono and fluoro.

I recently put Power Pro on my 2500 Shimano Solstace. Only have one fishing trip since putting it on, but I like it and will start using it through attrition (too expensive to do all at once)on my other rods. I was having line memory problems and this stuff is ruler straight when it comes off the spool.

May be my imagination, but with the zero strecth in the braid, the fish seem to 'fight more' when hooked! I guess the sensitivity is so great that you feel the fish's every move.

I am sold, expensive? yes, but worth it.

Mike

Mike--While the initial expense is higher than mono, long term it probably is less. Braid last forever----unlike mono.

I have a Mitchell Spidercast spinning reel from the late 90's that was MADE for braid. The reel's a typical 50ish dollar spinning reel, and doesn't even have a metal frame.

I'd think you'd be fine as long as you don't try to overpower the reel. Also be careful as the typical loops you get in your line with spinning gear turn to knots much faster with braided line.
